Why the Arctic?

Where the Waters of the World Begin Their Journey

The Arctic is one of the earth's great energy points — and, in a very real sense, a wellspring of the world's ocean currents. In the Arctic and North Atlantic seas, cold, dense water sinks and sets in motion the global ocean conveyor belt — the vast circulation that carries water through the Atlantic, Indian, Pacific, and Southern Oceans, touching every shore on earth over its centuries-long journey. A prayer offered at these waters is, symbolically, a prayer carried by the currents to every ocean and every coast — a blessing set in motion for the whole world.

Oceanographic basis: NOAA describes the global conveyor belt (thermohaline circulation) as beginning near the North Pole, where cold, dense water sinks and travels through all the world's ocean basins. Source: NOAA Ocean Service
